Care Instructions

A handcrafted Siva Shakti Artworks Tanjore painting is created to be treasured for generations. With proper care, the richness of the colours, 22K gold foil, decorative stones and traditional detailing can be preserved beautifully over time.

Display Your Artwork Carefully

Choose a clean, dry indoor location for your painting.

Avoid displaying the artwork:

  • In direct sunlight for prolonged periods
  • Near windows receiving strong afternoon sun
  • Close to heaters, fireplaces or air-conditioning vents
  • In bathrooms, kitchens or other high-humidity areas
  • Where the painting may be exposed to water, steam or excessive dust

Stable indoor conditions are best for preserving the artwork and frame.

Protect from Direct Sunlight

Continuous exposure to strong sunlight may gradually affect the colours, decorative elements and frame finish.

Where possible, display your Tanjore painting in an area with soft or indirect lighting.

Keep Away from Moisture

Tanjore paintings contain multiple handcrafted layers, including embossed decorative work, gold foil, stones and painted surfaces.

Avoid exposing the painting to:

  • Water
  • High humidity
  • Condensation
  • Damp walls
  • Steam

Never wipe the artwork with a wet cloth.

Cleaning the Painting

For routine maintenance, gently remove surface dust using a:

Soft, clean and dry microfiber cloth

or a very soft dusting brush.

If your painting is protected by glass, clean only the outside surface of the glass.

Do not spray cleaning products directly onto the glass while the artwork is hanging. Instead, lightly apply the cleaner to a cloth first and carefully wipe the glass, ensuring no liquid reaches the frame or artwork.

Caring for the 22K Gold Foil

The gold foil and embossed detailing are delicate decorative elements.

Please do not:

  • Rub the gold work
  • Scratch the surface
  • Use polishing agents
  • Apply metal cleaners
  • Use abrasive cloths or brushes
  • Attempt to restore loose foil yourself

The natural brilliance of the gold is best maintained by minimal direct handling.

Caring for Stones & Decorative Work

Tanjore artworks may feature decorative stones and detailed embellishments that are individually applied.

Avoid pressing, rubbing or attempting to reposition any decorative elements.

If you notice a stone becoming loose, please contact us rather than using household adhesives, as unsuitable glue may permanently damage the surrounding artwork.

Caring for the Frame

Use a clean, soft and dry cloth to dust your traditional wooden or Mani-style frame.

Avoid:

  • Furniture polish
  • Chemical cleaners
  • Alcohol-based products
  • Excessive water
  • Abrasive cleaning materials

For deeply carved areas, a soft brush may be used gently to remove dust.

Handling Your Artwork

Always handle the painting carefully.

When moving it:

  • Use both hands
  • Support the frame from underneath
  • Avoid lifting the artwork from decorative carved sections
  • Never hold the painting by its top ornamentation
  • Keep jewellery, watches and sharp objects away from the artwork

For larger pieces, we recommend having two people move the painting.

Hanging Your Painting

Ensure that the wall mounting system is appropriate for the size and weight of your framed artwork.

For larger or heavier Tanjore paintings, professional installation is recommended.

Do not rely on lightweight adhesive hooks for substantial framed artworks.

Storage

If the painting needs to be stored:

  • Keep it upright where possible
  • Store it in a clean, dry indoor environment
  • Cover it with a soft breathable protective layer
  • Avoid direct contact with plastic against the artwork surface
  • Do not place heavy objects on top of it
  • Keep it away from damp floors and walls

For long-term storage, additional protective packaging is recommended.

Avoid DIY Repairs

Because Tanjore paintings involve specialised traditional techniques, please do not attempt to repair:

  • Gold foil
  • Embossed work
  • Stones
  • Painted areas
  • Decorative borders
  • Traditional frames

Improper repairs can cause permanent damage.

If your artwork requires attention, please contact Siva Shakti Artworks for guidance.
